Race to Silver New Years Eve

Last minute race idea from Seth Davis, on the last day of the year.  Since I dropped the ball on getting the Hyak Christmas Eve Race going this year, decided we should do something before the year is up.  An email was sent out to the usual people possibly interested in suffering and got five hearty souls to show up for a race out to Silver Peak and back from the Silver Fir base area.  Great weather, and fast conditions made for a fun day.  It was cool to see different tactics used (skinning vs skating certain sections) and everyone pushing hard.  It was a close race the whole way with me Seth, Lowell, and Jan all topping out on the Silver ridge within minutes of each other.  In the end a good transition put me just  in front of Seth for the final groomer descent to Silver Fir, within a minute I realized that I had dropped a skin.  Immediately I hit the breaks and started to skate uphill, Seth whizzed by hollering "I got your skin".  There was no catching him!  Everyone made the round trip in under 1 hour 45 min!  Great times, and for sure a race that will be repeated before the end of the season.

L to R; me, David, Seth, Jan, Lowell

  1. Would you mind providing a description of the route that was used for this race? I'm curious what the best way to get out there from the resort is.

    Thanks

  2. Hi Jake, thanks for checking out the site! The route we took: Leave Silver Fir base and tour up outback ski run to the white rabbit trail which traverses to Grand Junction, then get on the Mt Catherine loop trail around radio mtn to windy acres, then from there it's just the easiest and most direct route up the north ridge area.

    1. Thanks, I think I get it now. There are so many trails in the area that it's hard to understand them just by looking at the maps. :)
